"this one will be a game changer"

The press had chance to play Downward Spiral: Horus Station first time at GDC in San Francisco and previews are online now. Response has been amazing and here's some highlights.

Paste Magazine picked us to their "The 12 Best Games of GDC” list and we got #3 spot! They wrote that "this one will be a game changer” and that "The end result is highly polished, with a delicious melding of both film and videogame sensibilities.”

Hardcore Gamer called our game "ambitious", wrote that "Downward Spiral puts the Unity engine to use spectacularly" and that "With a well-crafted movement system and gorgeous visuals, the game is shaping up to be a well-crafted, space-faring mystery."

Destructoid  wrote with the title "Horus Station has a new take on zero-gravity games" that "It's all very immersive and I'd attribute that to the unique movement system and the seemingly-brilliantly designed space station" and  "The result is a space station that feels believable.".

"one of our most anticipated VR games on the horizon"

Prior to release of Downward Spiral: Horus station we are releasing development diaries which cover different aspects of game development. In the first diary 3rd Eye Studios Can Uzer, the game’s sound designer, describes the challenges and creative decisions underpinning Downward Spiral: Horus Station’s audio.

For a game ostensibly dialogue-free, sound plays a huge role in crafting atmosphere and directing narrative. Uzer talks us through the team’s desire to create an “analogue” and “utilitarian” soundscape, one that aligns the game with the canon of classic sci-fi including Solaris, Alien, and Moon.

Media coverage about first diary has been overwhelming. For example UploadVR wrote that "Downward Spiral: Horus Station has to be one of our most anticipated VR games on the horizon right now"

Our CTO as speaker at HEL Tech // Gaming & eSports event

Amazing press coverage about Horus Station

pleikkari.jpg

We feel very humbled about the fact how well Horus Station  was received on media and among players. We spotted Downward Spiral: Horus Station stories on 200 news outlets including VentureBeat, various IGN sites and for example UploadVr wrote that:

"Downward Spiral looks like the kind of full VR game fans have been clamoring for these past few years".

Sony has been kind enough to promote us on their website, blog, social media and on their YouTube Channel. Top of this our trailer has been watched already 250 000 times. What a great week!

ANNOUNCING OUR  FIRST BIG GAME

HIGH-CONCEPT SCI-FI THRILLER DOWNWARD SPIRAL: HORUS STATION DESCENDS ON TO PLAYSTATION 4 AND PC THIS SPRING

Embark on a thought-provoking mystery in single-player or co-op

Helsinki, Finland - February 7th, 2018 - Independent game and technology studio, 3rd Eye Studios is releasing its zero-gravity space adventure, Downward Spiral: Horus Station, this Spring on PlayStation 4 and PC, with optional PlayStation VR, Oculus Touch, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality support. Downward Spiral: Horus Station lures players through a lost vessel abandoned by its crew. Solving the mystery of the space station will take wits and ingenuity as you fight or avoid dangers unknown. Use the ship's maintenance hardware - like bolt throwers, rail guns, and arc welders to take out threats, solve puzzles and find the truth of why Horus Station has been left drifting in space.

Downward Spiral: Horus Station’s focus will be heavy on environmental storytelling, as the game features no dialogue or cinematics. Instead, players will have to piece together the plot through observation and interpretation as they navigate the derelict space station, accompanied by the electronic ambient soundtrack composed by platinum selling HIM frontman Ville Valo.

Additionally, 3rd Eye Studios is introducing an innovative control system that rethinks how movement works in zero-gravity. Rather than just float, players will have to push themselves off of the environment to propel themselves forward, or use tools just as they would in deep space.

The game also features a raft of options for how to experience it. Not only is it playable on both a regular screen and VR headset, the game is also playable in two player co-op, allowing players to explore the Horus Station’s deceptively immaculate, retro-futurist decor as an investigative duo. There’s also the option to entirely remove combat from the campaign for those who wish to soak up the story without enemies. In addition to Horus Station’s story campaign, there’s eight-player PvP and PvE multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Horde and Survivor challenges.

“Inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Twin Peaks, and There Will be Blood, Downward Spiral: Horus Station offers a thought-provoking piece of hard sci-fi set in deep space,” said Gregory Louden, Lead Designer of 3rd Eye Studios.

“Last year’s Downward Spiral: Prologue was our proof of concept. Now we’re almost ready to let players embark on a full-length adventure to discover the atmospheric Horus Station,” said Kari Koivistoinen, CEO of 3rd Eye Studios. “For those that wish to experience the game in VR, we’ve continued to develop our proprietary tech that mitigates VR motion sickness while allowing for a full range of movement. Movement is seamless, allowing players to engage in both thoughtful exploration and pulse-quickening combat.”

New awesome team members!

Super excited to have new, very talented team members. First, we have new Tech Lead Tomas (on picture left). He has been over 10 years in the games industry. Built tech for the Operation Flashpoint franchise at Codemasters and performed various roles at Unity Technologies with our CTO, including leading platform and editor feature development. Then we have Greg. He was Senior Narrative Designer at Remedy on Quantum Break, Cross Fire 2 and P7 with our CEO and Lead Artist.  Greg also worked as a Animation, Crowd or FX Technical Director at Framestore, MPC, Dr. D Studios and Animal Logic on Gravity, World War Z, Jack the Giant Slayer, Prometheus, Happy Feet 2, Sucker Punch and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Gahoole. Part of the Academy, BAFTA, Golden Globe and VES Award winning Gravity visual effects team. On art side we have new Junior 3D Artist Maikki. She's enthusiastic and driven 3D game artist and animator, who loves challenging herself on all aspects of the art process. Despite the fact she's just finishing her Bachelor of Culture and Arts she has already developed VR games before joining 3rd Eye Studios.

"VR is more than a game for 3rd Eye Studios"

Arja

"From the Highwaymen to Audioslave, via Cream and Them Crooked Vultures, the concept of a supergroup has been a mainstay of modern music. However, the idea of bringing together a troupe of creative heavyweights is far from a concept confined to the music industry.

Case in point: 3rd Eye Studios represents the meeting point of many of the big hitters in the Finnish games industry. Founded in June 2016 by veterans of Remedy, Bugbear, Moon Studios, RedLynx and Unity, the studio has set out to shake up the world of VR gaming. They aren’t doing this just by releasing games, either. They have much bigger plans, starting out with 3rd Eye Core technology and tools, and the Downward Spiral series."

Nice article about our company. You can read the whole story from here: http://www.goodnewsfinland.com/feature/32604/

"We really want to show people what you can do in VR, really showcase the medium"

Here's good article about us in Gameindustry.biz-webisite:

"When you're starting a studio the most important thing is definitely to get the right people."

"Indeed, Remedy's reputation is built on competencies that are particularly well suited to VR, where 'immersion' is the ultimate goal: world building, storytelling, the creation of atmosphere, all supported by and sold on immaculate production values. 3rd Eye Studios first project, Downward Spiral, seems a perfect fit for these values; an anthology series inspired by TV shows like Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone, where each episode is a unique and (mostly) self-contained experience, but related to the others in tone and theme."

"We really want to show people what you can do in VR, really showcase the medium.... We want to inspire other developers, but if they want a shortcut they can get our tools and have access to the same features. You'll be able to build better VR with us. If you think about all of the good game companies out there, you need a very strong technology side in order to achieve something great. If you use the same tools as everyone else it's way harder to stand out."

Youtube Reviews Roundup

Great videos again. Enjoy these but please keep in mind that these videos contain spoilers and this first one also a lot swearing but apparantely guys did have a lot of fun:
