Along the spring we made three developer diaries covering various topics of making the game: audio design, story telling, art direction and so on. You can check all the videos below. Also take a look at some photos from the 3rd Eye Studios office in Helsinki and from the launch day of the PC version.

3rd Eye Studios' sound designer Can Uzer reveals interesting details about his work bringing life to the soundscape of Horus Station.

In this second Downward Spiral: Horus Station developer diary 3rd Eye Studios' staff offer insight about game's visual design, art process and environmental storytelling.

In this third Downward Spiral: Horus Station developer diary 3rd Eye Studios' staff offer insight into the zero g gameplay, controls and meaning.

First Horus Station review highlights

Downward Spiral: Horus Station launched on Steam last Thursday. First reviews have been mainly positive, but for a small indie studio reviews have been both exciting and nerve wrecking. Still we are really proud what we accomplished in just over one year and small team. Here are some highlights from the first reviews:

Downward Spiral: Horus Station Review: The 2001 To Lone Echo’s Gravity
”one of 2018’s best VR games yet. - 8/10”

Review: Downward Spiral: Horus Station
”For players that enjoy floating around in space, Downward Spiral: Horus Station is a great all-rounder. - 80/100”

Downward Spiral: Horus Station Review
”All in all, Downward Spiral: Horus Station is a great game, but a few small improvements could turn this game from being great to being a fantastic game. - 8/10”

Downward Spiral: Horus Station Review (Oculus Rift gameplay)
”It is a solid VR title that is also playable in flat-screen mode. 4/5 - would explore the eerie hallways again”

What about you – have you played through Horus Station yet? If you liked it, go and write a small user review on Steam or tell a friend about the game. We will forever love you for it. And thank you so much for joining us on our space adventure!

Downward Spiral launch date!

It is a cheerful day here at 3rd Eye Studios. We can today announce that release date is set. Downward Spiral: Horus Station will launch on PC via Steam on Thursday May 31st.

Horus Station is also coming to PlayStation 4 and PS VR later this summer. We want that the PS4 version is up to the highest of standards, so we will take little bit more time to make sure that happens. The extra wait will be worth it.

The price of the Downward Spiral: Horus Station for both PC and PS4 will only be 19,99 dollars or 14,99 euros.

See you on board Horus Station on May 31th!

Horus Station Spring Update

Spring has finally come to Finland, but even as the sun is shining warmly and birds are singing outside, 3rd Eye Studios' team is working hard finishing up Downward Spiral: Horus Station.

Now we can confidently say that Horus Station is on its final legs of development. Next week we will have visual content locked down, which means that even our talented artists will focus on testing the game instead of producing more visual assets. What is best we can soon announce the release date, price and other details.

The third developer diary video is something not to miss soon. It will center on zero gravity game play and offers some cool insight to the unique movement, about the game modes, and also uncovers motivations behind the mysterious story of Horus Station. Alongside the diary we will also show a new footage and screenshots, which you can get a taste below.

Stay tuned and remember to check our Steam Store page and social media channels in the links. Until the next time, happy month of May and many sunny spring days to all!

"this one will be a game changer"

The press had chance to play Downward Spiral: Horus Station first time at GDC in San Francisco and previews are online now. Response has been amazing and here's some highlights.

Paste Magazine picked us to their "The 12 Best Games of GDC” list and we got #3 spot! They wrote that "this one will be a game changer” and that "The end result is highly polished, with a delicious melding of both film and videogame sensibilities.”

Hardcore Gamer called our game "ambitious", wrote that "Downward Spiral puts the Unity engine to use spectacularly" and that "With a well-crafted movement system and gorgeous visuals, the game is shaping up to be a well-crafted, space-faring mystery."

Destructoid  wrote with the title "Horus Station has a new take on zero-gravity games" that "It's all very immersive and I'd attribute that to the unique movement system and the seemingly-brilliantly designed space station" and  "The result is a space station that feels believable.".

"one of our most anticipated VR games on the horizon"

Prior to release of Downward Spiral: Horus station we are releasing development diaries which cover different aspects of game development. In the first diary 3rd Eye Studios Can Uzer, the game’s sound designer, describes the challenges and creative decisions underpinning Downward Spiral: Horus Station’s audio.

For a game ostensibly dialogue-free, sound plays a huge role in crafting atmosphere and directing narrative. Uzer talks us through the team’s desire to create an “analogue” and “utilitarian” soundscape, one that aligns the game with the canon of classic sci-fi including Solaris, Alien, and Moon.

Media coverage about first diary has been overwhelming. For example UploadVR wrote that "Downward Spiral: Horus Station has to be one of our most anticipated VR games on the horizon right now"

Our CTO as speaker at HEL Tech // Gaming & eSports event

Our CTO Veli-Pekka Kokkonen was talking about our 3rd Eye Core technology and tools at HEL Tech // Gaming & eSports event. Of course this was great opportunity to us, because we focused on technology, gaming and eSports.

HEL Tech is a tech meetup in Helsinki, featuring various topics in tech in the first week of each month. It brings together tech and startup enthusiasts, experts from industry, academia and startups and investors to discuss fresh trends in a relaxed setting.

Amazing press coverage about Horus Station

We feel very humbled about the fact how well Horus Station  was received on media and among players. We spotted Downward Spiral: Horus Station stories on 200 news outlets including VentureBeat, various IGN sites and for example UploadVr wrote that:

"Downward Spiral looks like the kind of full VR game fans have been clamoring for these past few years".

Sony has been kind enough to promote us on their website, blog, social media and on their YouTube Channel. Top of this our trailer has been watched already 250 000 times. What a great week!

Embark on a thought-provoking mystery in single-player or co-op

Helsinki, Finland - February 7th, 2018 - Independent game and technology studio, 3rd Eye Studios is releasing its zero-gravity space adventure, Downward Spiral: Horus Station, this Spring on PlayStation 4 and PC, with optional PlayStation VR, Oculus Touch, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality support. Downward Spiral: Horus Station lures players through a lost vessel abandoned by its crew. Solving the mystery of the space station will take wits and ingenuity as you fight or avoid dangers unknown. Use the ship's maintenance hardware - like bolt throwers, rail guns, and arc welders to take out threats, solve puzzles and find the truth of why Horus Station has been left drifting in space.

Downward Spiral: Horus Station’s focus will be heavy on environmental storytelling, as the game features no dialogue or cinematics. Instead, players will have to piece together the plot through observation and interpretation as they navigate the derelict space station, accompanied by the electronic ambient soundtrack composed by platinum selling HIM frontman Ville Valo.

Additionally, 3rd Eye Studios is introducing an innovative control system that rethinks how movement works in zero-gravity. Rather than just float, players will have to push themselves off of the environment to propel themselves forward, or use tools just as they would in deep space.

The game also features a raft of options for how to experience it. Not only is it playable on both a regular screen and VR headset, the game is also playable in two player co-op, allowing players to explore the Horus Station’s deceptively immaculate, retro-futurist decor as an investigative duo. There’s also the option to entirely remove combat from the campaign for those who wish to soak up the story without enemies. In addition to Horus Station’s story campaign, there’s eight-player PvP and PvE multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Horde and Survivor challenges.

“Inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Twin Peaks, and There Will be Blood, Downward Spiral: Horus Station offers a thought-provoking piece of hard sci-fi set in deep space,” said Gregory Louden, Lead Designer of 3rd Eye Studios.

“Last year’s Downward Spiral: Prologue was our proof of concept. Now we’re almost ready to let players embark on a full-length adventure to discover the atmospheric Horus Station,” said Kari Koivistoinen, CEO of 3rd Eye Studios. “For those that wish to experience the game in VR, we’ve continued to develop our proprietary tech that mitigates VR motion sickness while allowing for a full range of movement. Movement is seamless, allowing players to engage in both thoughtful exploration and pulse-quickening combat.”
